Overview

A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE

Cape Verde is the world’s third largest reserve of loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta) after Oman and Florida. Guided tours to observe turtle nesting are held every night from June to mid-October. August is the peak month of the nesting season.

Turtle watching helps to keep these ancient creatures alive, showing the archipelago’s inhabitants that a live turtle is worth more than a dead one. In the past, they were hunted and sold on the market for their bones and meat. Unfortunately, turtle eggs are still a dish that is consumed illegally in some areas of the archipelago.

FAQs

Why watch turtles?
A turtle lives an average of 100 years. After birth, it remains in the sea for 20 years and then returns to the place where it was born to nest. Without GPS. In the dark. It is a miracle that cannot be missed.
Will it be possible to take photographs at night?
At night, you won't be able to take photographs, even without a flash. Turtles are easily frightened, even though they are harmless. You will be able to observe and touch the turtle up close once it has finished building its nest.
